Subject: ES alum receives National Geographic Award

Hi, ES folks –

Hurray for ES students!  Recent ES alumna Natasha Gownaris has received a National Geographic Society Young Explorers Award to support her research on the impacts of climate change and hydroelectric power development on Lake Turkana, Kenya, with particular attention to its fisheries.

Tasha is a third year Ph.D. student at the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University.  She is working closely with the Turkana Basin Institute, which was founded by Dr. Richard Leakey, and scientists William Ojwang and John Malala of the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute.

Here is a photo of Tasha in Kenya.  She is co-author with me on a manuscript and numerous conference presentations on our mussel research in Maine — you never know where an ES 460 will lead!!!

            ES rocks! – John
